This 2008 earthship combines
the latest earthship technology along with a spectacular location
sitting on your choice of 40 or 160 acres of a pristine mixture of forest, meadow, and prairie.
This one bedroom, one bath home blends into its incredible setting
taking in the views. The 40 or 160 acres borders national forest and BLM land giving you so much privacy that will be preserved
- if purchased with 160 acres, the property also borders the Rio Grande
del Norte National Mounument. The
property is fenced to identify it as private land. This prime
elk habitat has historically come with an elk permit from the state.
The following video tour and still pictures will introduce you to
this earthship.
The Property
This property sits just west of San Antonio Mountain -
about one hour's drive from Taos (however, basic services such as gas,
market, and post office are less than half an hour away in Antonito,
Colorado). This huge rounded mountain claims the title of the
largest mountain in the United States that is not part of a mountain
range. It's huge rounded shape can be seen for miles in all
directions as it dominates the scenery along US Highway 285 in extreme
northern New Mexico and the adjacent area of Colorado.
The map above shows the 160 acre parcel measuring 1/2
mile by 1/2 mile and its relation to the forest roads. If
purchased with 40 acres, it includes the northwest quarter of this
square. The
earthship sits near the northwest corner of the magenta tinted area near
the tip of the arrow. This property sits in a small island of private
land completely surrounded by public lands. Carson National Forest
forms the northern boundary of the property with Rio Grande del Norte
National Monument forming a portion of the southern boundary.
Montoya Creek flows through the property through much of the year.
Here you see the aspens, pines, and picturesque rock formations that
border this creek.
Home Details
Michael Reynolds and his crew from Earthship Biotecture
built this earthship using the package earthship design with a
greenhouse in front of the bathroom and bedroom areas. In this
picture, the double green house is in the center of the picture with the bedroom and
bathroom behind it, and the great room and kitchen are in the center,
while the mud room/airlock is on the far right leading by the main
entrance.
The door on the east side of the home provides its main
entry.
Between the front door and the great room sits this mud
room that serves as an airlock. It allows better climate control
by keeping the air inside the home from escaping every time that someone
exits or enters. The door to the right leads to the great room.
Here you also see the beautiful views seen through the south-facing
windows.
The great room combines kitchen, living and dining
areas. The beautiful flagstone floors, tongue-and-groove wood
ceilings, and adobe plaster walls seen here are typical of those seen
throughout the home.
The kitchen features a large porcelain sink, concrete
counter tops, and custom cabinetry and shelving. Another
countertop of the same size sits to the right of this picture.
Beyond the great room sits the bathroom and central
hall. Here washer and drier hookups allow you to bring in your own
laundry appliances. The open door its right leads to the
bathroom. This area also features access to the homes systems such
as water management and the electrical panels.
The bathroom area features bottle art in the wall in the
shower partition. The sink with a mirrored vanity is at the far
left of the pictures. Windows from the greenhouse fill the
bathroom with light. An operable window allows climate control by
either bringing in or separating air from the greenhouse to this portion
of the house.
The bedroom has its own door leading into the
greenhouse. Between the natural light coming from these windows,
and an overhead skylight, light fills this room.
The sun-filled greenhouse contains its own gray water
planter. Doors lead to the bedroom in addition to the outside.
A separate skylight allows venting excess heat. This room provides
a beautiful space to enjoy the views of the forest and San Antonio
Mountain as well as an integral part of the home's climate control.
Systems information
The seller is offering an allowance at closing to
replace systems and appliances that were removed from the home.
