Located in the Granite outcroppings
and forested hillsides to the northwest of Colorado Springs, this
earthship sits amidst your choice of either 5.09 acres (at the asking
price) or a total of 19.60 acres for $360,000. The home comes with
the plans to add a lower level and expand it to be a split level
earthship.
The following video tour and still pictures will introduce you to
this beautiful home
Location
The home sits on a 5.09 acre parcel known as Lot 75A within the Twin
Rock Subdivision. This puts it just south of US Highway 24
southwest of the town of Divide, southeast of Florissant, and just to
the east of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.
This plan shows the subdivision portion surrounding the home. The
blue shaded area comprises the lots that were merged together to create
lot 75A (once merged, the lots may not be re-subdivided). The
house sits on the lot shown as 76 and 77. The green shaded lots may be
added to the purchase bringing to total to 19.60 acres. To get a feel
for the size of the combined lots, the picture above the plan was taken
on the green shaded portion near lot 68. The green shaded lots
have never been merged and may be sold off individually.
The House
The home was designed and built using the principles of earthship
construction which includes using a passive solar design and building of
a combination of natural and recycled materials.
This plan shows the different phases in which the house was designed to
be built. Phase I is the house as it is built now. Phase II
consists of the lower level - making this a split-level earthship.
The plan for the Phase II addition includes a large family room, two
bathrooms, and three bedrooms.
The glass front door provides easy access from the driveway. To
its left is the garage and to the right is the living space of the home.
This picture also shows the southwest style vigas and large south facing
windows. Beyond lie forested hills for as far as can be seen.
At the entry, details such as the homes reclaimed brick floors,
rough-cut 1 x 6’s ceiling, and decorative entry closet door (on right)
welcome residents and guests alike. The door in the center of the
picture leads to the garage.
The view from the entry to the right looks down the class front of the
home. The first alcove to the left holds the living room, next -
the centrally located kitchen. Beyond is the office and bathroom
area, followed by the master bedroom. These south-facing windows
provide passive solar heat and abundant light.
The living room features the gas log stove on the right and a
comfortable spot for furniture. Skylights provide both light and
ventilation. Looking the other direction, beautiful views of the
the forested countryside fill the picture windows. Here you also see the
planter - designed to be filled with all kinds of beautiful plants.
The back of the living room has been walled off to create this second
bedroom. It's skylight gives it natural light.
The large countertops, deluxe chef's stove and other beautiful stainless
steel appliances make this spacious kitchen the cooks dream. The
door at the back leads to a large pantry complete with space for a large
freezer.
The dining area sits between the kitchen and the windows. Behind
the table in this picture are the steps that lead outside now, but would
lead to the lower level once Phase II is built.
The home's bright and beautiful bathroom enjoys the large double sink
countertop and views to the forest.
An office area fits in the hall between the bathroom.
Another room that could function as a bedroom sits behind the office
nook. Here you can see the earthship style tire walls. A
skylight gives this room plenty of light.
The spacious master bedroom occupies the entire east side of the home.
Its own gas log stove supplements the natural passive solar heat.
The Detached Garage and Storage
Near the house sits this detached garage and storage area. One bay
was originally designed to house a place for painting automobiles.
Since it is plumped with a water hydrant, is fully insulated, and has
sheetrock walls, it could be converted to a guest house. To
its right sits the a storage shed. Between these buildings and the
attached garage, this home features plenty of storage.
Whether purchased with 5.09 acres or with the total of 19.60 acres, this
home makes a terrific place to live the earthship lifestyle.
