This one bedroom, one bath earthship
sitting on ten panoramic acres provides the ideal combination of land,
views, easy access to the town of Taos, and sustainable living.
Built by Michael Reynolds, it features the "Package Earthship" design
that combines functionality and comfort. I call it the Bald Eagle
Earthship because it sits in the Bald Eagle subdivision, and the eagles
are commonly seen near the Rio Grande Gorge just two miles a way.
The Home
The following video tour and still pictures will introduce you to
this beautiful earthship.
The picture above shows the layout of the home.
The front door in the center leads to the great room which combines the
kitchen and living areas. The bedroom and bathroom lies behind the
window on the left. The garage at the right could possibly be
converted into a second bedroom or left as a garage.
The flagstone patio welcomes you as you come to the
front door. A number of deciduous trees provide cooling shade in
the summer, yet drop their leaves in the winter to let the sunshine in.
The raised bed at the left makes a good garden space.
Upon entering the great room you see the wood burning
stove and living area to the right. Just to the right of the
picture sits the door to the garage. Here you also see the wood
ceiling.
The kitchen area sits to the left with a propane
cook-top and refrigerator. Not shown in this picture is a work island
that also functions as a desk, separating the kitchen space from the
living area.
Planters run along the windows. They are setup to
be used as a gray-water recycling system, though they are presently not
being used as such. This view faces the door leading to the garage.
Between the great room and bedroom
sites a work area and the electric control panels - one for DC power and
the other for AC. The home received high speed wireless internet
access from an antennae on the roof. Although there is no
telephone lines running to the property, phone service can be obtained
through the internet supplier. Cell phones also work. A
skylight over this area provides light.
The bedroom sits in the back left
corner of the home with natural light coming through the bathroom area.
The large shower area and toilet sit
adjacent to the bedroom.
Here you see the sink and some of
the storage next to the bathroom. The farthest left doors conceal
some of the water mechanical systems.
This home's garage is unique in that very few
earthships have them. Here you see the unfinished walls. Should
you desire a second bedroom, you could finish it off and convert it to additional living
space.
